Life is simple here at the HF Bar Ranch and we like it that way. Situated in a pristine valley on nearly 7,500 acres bordering Wyoming's Bighorn National Forest, there is a darn good chance that you will find something to do here. From riding the high plains and pure mountain meadows, to casting a fly rod, to hiking the mountain country, to watching your children safely run with abandon, to just reading a book on your cabin porch, you're sure to love life at HF Bar!

Children at the Ranch

Great for children aged 0 and over

We have a vibrant and energetic Kid Team that provides entertainment and caregiving for those who are still too young to go out on the trails during the morning and evening riding hours. All you need to do is drop your child off after 9:00 a.m. at the Kid Club House and our Kid Team will take them off on short hikes, do craft projects, visit the ranch petting animals, make pictures out of clouds, and dress-up.

Frisbee golf, boat races and hikes and outings for teens.

We try to center much of their activities around nature so that kids understand that bugs and coyotes, mountain lions and elk all have their place in this world and we humans are, simply, members of that same natural world. We teach respect for the land and for all of its critters…and we try to teach kids not to be afraid of nature, but respect its power. It is important to us that they understand that they are all members of Nature’s family! At the HF Bar, we love playing in the dirt!

We also have an on-staff fly-fisherman to help start youngsters off into a lifetime of fly-tying and catch-and-release practices. For first time riders, we offer lessons, if requested. 'Mosquito Fleet' rides, where just the kids go off for a lunch picnic or a hamburger cookout in the evening, complete with yummy marshmallow, chocolate and graham cracker s’mores happens a couple of times a week.

Most families choose to ride with each other and we are all for that concept!

For the under 5 crowd, there are morning and evening pony rides lead by our Kid Team.

Teens can be a picky and tricky age group to please. We like to keep things easy going, but never boring. Spur of the moment excursions are always an option…hiking to the swimming hole, playing Frisbee golf, paintballing, fly fishing lessons, or just getting to know new friends. We don’t have to stick to any schedules. At the Ranch, we think making kids and teens smile and keeping everyone laughing and busy is the absolute key to a successful family vacation.

Ranch History

Now in its 108th year as a family-run business, HF Bar Ranch was originally just a portion of land that was spotted by two brothers-in-law, Warren C. Gorrell and Frank Ogilvie Horton, while riding by horseback over the Big Horn Mountains in the fall of 1910.

Warren and his wife Demia purchased the land in 1911 and between then and 1929, they and their four children spent most summers at the ranch.

Our trained team of skilled chefs prepare a sundry array of “home cooked” meals, fresh baked goods, sizzling breakfasts, and a 'Kid Bar' for the young ones (of all ages!) who just want to eat and run. We serve as much organic and non-GMO food as is available. We, carefully, select our meats, vegetables and fruits including buying our chickens and turkeys from the local community where the birds are raised cage- and antibiotic-free.

We’re very conscious about making sure that all kids’ meals are nutritious, as well as, appealing for them! No one goes hungry around here! After lunch and dinner each day, the Kitchen is open for ice cream cones and snacks and, although there is no cooking allowed, there is always a snack available.

Why our riding stands out

  • Generally, you’ll ride the same horse for your entire stay. Horses, like people, have personalities. We like to match them up
  • Each month of the season directly connects the rider with a phenomenal natural wonder. In early summer, wildflowers carpet the Ranch creating an awe-inspiring sea of color. In the mornings and evenings of mid-summer, the sun casts an amazing light from a low angle on the horizon; calling the deer and antelope out of hiding to fill the tall grass meadows. As fall approaches, the elk bugle, and the gold leaves of cottonwood and aspen trees light up the mountain sides and creek bottoms.
  • We work with novice riders to build your confidence and improve your skills. Veterans of the saddle are hard-pressed to push the boundaries of all one can explore by horseback at the HF Bar Ranch. There are exciting rides along scenic trails across prairie hills, over creek crossings, leading up canyons into high meadows and mountain timber. The rock formations and vistas are breath-taking, and the expanse of the Ranch feels limitless.

Fishing & Wildlife

Generations of HF Bar Ranch guests have made fly-fishing for wild trout a central part of their Western experience. Our 10-mile stretch of Rock Creek is small stream fishing for wild trout at it’s best – a never-ending source of  skill-enhancing challenge and simple pleasures.

The Bighorn Mountain region is surely a spectacular fishery in it’s own right. Passionate anglers often choose the HF Bar Ranch because they desire guided fishing trips on the rich variety of waters found in this vast area of wild waters.  From the Powder River to Piney Creek, the private trout streams available here may represent the best collection in the lower 48.  There is no place better situated than the HF Bar Ranch to conveniently access all of these “off-the-radar” destinations.

Rock Creek Anglers is the exclusive fishing outfitter to guests of the HF Bar Ranch. Since 1992, they have provided the best guides for nearly every type of fishing trip you can imagine, from Pack Trips to Willow Park to float trips down the Bighorn and the North Platte. Rock Creek Anglers also provides on-ranch instruction for novice anglers and teens.

Visitor Reviews

Dont just take our word for it, see what visitors like you say...

What a Dude Ranch Experience Should Be

This has been our only dude ranch experience but it exceeded all our expectations. Most of the families that were visiting at the ranch had been coming for years. Margi, the lady that owns and runs the place with her five children, is a no non-sense kind of a lady who does a great job at running the place. Cabins are rustic, but many have fire places which is great at nigh. Food is excellent. You ride twice a day across pristine and beautiful land. You are in another world, since there are no tvs, no phones and spotty cel service. It is not cheap. A family of four runs about $1500 a day but includes everything.
