The High Lonesome Ranch sits along the spine of the continent on the Western Slope of the Colorado Rockies. A national park-scale landscape perfectly situated to help connect large ecosystems, we are right on a key habitat corridor and are working to restore, conserve, and steward a large western landscape to contribute to a western wildway for wildlife to roam and thrive that stretches from Mexico to Canada. A private conservation organization founded over 20 years ago, we are addressing the challenges of stewarding this landscape for habitat connection while we still can, and encouraging people to use it. With mountain forests, grasslands, spring creeks, and alpine mesas at an altitude that ranges from 4,000 to 9,000 feet, the ranch is home to diverse wildlife and provides a vast playground for sports and wilderness activities.

We want guests to share our landscape. Our mission to restore this ecosystem and conserve this swath of land while inviting use of it is only one of the things that sets us apart from other ranches. We are a working cattle ranch, use new best practices on the land, raise our own HLR Angus grassfed beef, and age it on the Ranch. Outdoor sports, laid-back luxury lodging, world-class local farm-to-table food, good people, and beautiful landscapes are just some of what we have to offer.

We will continue on our mission of restoring and conserving this iconic landscape for the land itself, for the wildlife, and so all of us will still have wild places to go and play. Outdoor enthusiasts are conservationists at heart. We invite you to join us.

Lodging

Western luxury lodging in private cabins & shared house suites offer space, privacy & choices. WIFI is available at headquarters, the main pavilion, and in most of the houses and cabins if you really want to stay connected while getting away to the western wilderness. All the accommodations have full stocked kitchens and large outdoor kennels are available for wing shooters who like to hunt over their own dogs.

The sprawling ranch sleeps only 37 within its 400+ square miles, giving an intimate, yet spacious feel to the experience. There is plenty of room and opportunity to feel like you own the place and get truly personalized service. Houses and cabins are spread out to optimize privacy. You’ll feel the close attention of our professional associates and skilled guides as they cater to your every wish. Guests can choose their favored type of accommodations based on availability and seasonality.

Food & Dining

HLR Angus beef, great local farm-to-table food sourced from the HLR orchard and herb garden with local pork and lamb from neighboring ranches paired with excellent local wines followed by starry fire pits are our inspired standards.

The culinary structure here at The High Lonesome Ranch is very unique. Our dining program is based on the needs and desires of the guests staying with us at the time. Menus can range from classical preparations, to family style, to multi course-tasting menus.

Dining experiences range from Dude Ranch family-style meals to Elevated Dining Experiences of multiple courses paired with appropriate excellent wines. Our own custom team-designed and fabricated barbeque pit is often used when we are serving outdoors or when we’re preparing anything that is perfect for grilling outdoors. Meals are served either in the HLR Pavilion, the Headquarters Dining Room near the fireplace, or Castle Rock Pavilion for a change of scenery. Sometimes we even take banquet tables and tablecloths out on the trail and welcome riders for a freshly prepared seated lunch under a stand of old trees. Many styles and many choices are always options, but every one is always an experience to look forward to.

Activities

The size and scope of the ranch offer so many possibilities. Fly-fishing for 5 species of trout, wing shooting for upland game birds in pristine coverts, dude ranch weeks where families and friends can participate in real cattle drives, glamorous camping in safari-style tents, family reunions, weddings, corporate group retreats, big game hunting, and personal getaways beckon – if you’re listening. All of these come with starry skies around the fire.

Our outdoor adventure, laid-back western luxury lodging, and 5-star hospitality are complemented by our inspired food. From the HLR orchard to the herb garden, our HLR Angus beef, local pork and lamb, and pairings with excellent local wines, our commitment to world-class local food is just the thing to round out an overall “Exactly as wild as you want” experience.

Kid's Programs

Children 4-15 are encouraged to participate with their families in the complete Dude Ranch experience. For families with younger members, we provide child care at an additional charge. Our Dude Ranch Experience is designed to include entire families with very different levels of experience. A first-time rider is paired with the perfect horse with a fitting temperament as well as an experienced rider’s being paired with a horse they will enjoy riding for their entire stay. Activities other than Dude Ranch activities are available for children to participate in with their families, such as mountain biking, swimming, hiking, fly-fishing (with instruction if needed), wild horse tours, wildlife viewing, etc.
