Welcome to the 7D Ranch, Wyoming’s premiere family guest ranch since 1958. We have a smaller guest capacity than most, which allows us to provide individual and personalized care. The ranch’s 10 rustic cabins are tucked into the scenic and remote Sunlight Basin, 50 miles northwest of Cody, in the heart of the Absaroka Mountains.

Surrounded by national forest and just a short drive from Yellowstone National Park, the 7D offers a setting of extraordinary beauty. Whether you are looking for a great guest ranch vacation, a pack trip into Wyoming wilderness, or a Fall hunting trip, let our friendly family and staff provide you and yours with an experience of a lifetime.

Children at the Ranch

Great for children aged 3 and over

The children’s program is geared for kids 6-12 years old, but kids of all ages enjoy participating in the activities. Our supervised children’s program allows young people to experience ranch life and come to understand the connections to the natural world. Ecological relationships are taught by example on daily hikes and rides. Children are introduced to the world of livestock and horses by patient wranglers who take great care to build kids’ confidence.

Ranch History

One of the oldest dude ranches in Wyoming, The 7D Ranch began as 'The Dewey Riddle Ranch', a guest ranch homesteaded by Dewey and Elsie Riddle. When the Dominick family of seven acquired it in the fifties, they opened it as a haven for family and friends from the East, renamed it the 7D, and have run it as a family operation ever since. From the Molesworth furniture in the Main Lodge, to the logs of the old cabins, the ranch helps us unite with the past. While much of the old West is quickly evolving, the 7D Ranch holds fast to its roots and offers guests a slice of the West as it was.

Fishing & Wildlife

We have a limited supply of fly-fishing equipment for guests use including rods, waders and boots. A good fly rod and an assortment of both dry and wet flies are advisable. We recommend 3 to 5 weight rods for fishing in our area. Universally good fly choices are: muddler minnows, royal coachman, humpies, woolie worms, grasshopper flies, adams, irresistibles and nymph patterns. We find that red and orange patterns work well on our river during most of the season. Appropriate hook sizes are 10 through 16. We do have a selection of flies for sale in our General store. You can purchase a fishing license online at wgfd.wyo.gov prior to arriving at the ranch. It is possible to do this at the ranch depending on our current internet connection. If you are interested in a fishing float trip off of the ranch, we recommend North Fork Anglers (307-527-7274, www.northforkanglers.com), Eastgate Anglers (307-587-3059, www.eastgateanglers.com), and Wyo Trout Guides (307-578-8217, www.wyomingtroutguides.com). We recommend making reservations in advance.

Visitor Reviews

Dont just take our word for it, see what visitors like you say...

A piece of paradise

I do not have enough good things to stay about my stay at the 7D Ranch. No words can describe how beautiful the drive in was or how gorgeous the landscape is surrounding the ranch. It is a perfect blend of rustic with enough features to not make you feel like you are roughing it. It did have a feel like you stepped back in time with the horses, rustic cabins, and friendly people. It was amazing to step out of life for a week and to be surrounded by the wilderness. The wildlife was amazing to see and included moose, big horn sheep, elk, eagles, coyote, and mule deer. You can tell that the people who own the ranch take a lot of pride in the way it is run and that they truly care about giving the best experience possible for their guests. I cannot wait to return!
