Ranch History

First worked by goat farmers during the Gold Rush, the land on which Greenhorn Ranch is built has a rich history that matches the American West. The lower parts of the property still house the goathouse where wagons would swing through to pick-up milk and cheese.

After that, Christmas tree farmers took over, harvesting the native firs to br

It wasn’t until 1962 that a group of wranglers and a wacky real estate investor decided to give it a try as a Dude Ranch. The stunning views and pristine surroundings inspired them to share the spirit of the west with visitors looking for something different, for a place to build tradition and memories together with their family, where the stars outshine city lights and the perfect s’more is still the most hotly debated issue.

That was the year Ralph Wilburn came to the property as a ranch hand. His dad, a ranch manager and purveyor, knew the investor and put his son to work. Ralph is a true cowboy. He takes pride in his work, works hard and lives humbly. He knows the horses, he’s worked the land, he’s served as the local fire chief and small business investor. He worked and lived on or near the ranch for decades. As the ranch grew, so did Ralph.

With 660 acres and access to 500,000 acres of public land for riding, 80+ horses, dozens of trails, relationships lasting for generations, and a ranch with more than 20 structures and dozens of rooms, Ralph has been a part of the ranch’s legacy from the start. He’s the reason people kept coming back, and he’s the reason this place has a spirit of its own.

Over the decades, the ranch has seen several owners and a lot has changed in the industry. Some things have stayed unapologetically the same. Ralph is one of those things. He and his wife Trish built the community at Greenhorn Ranch, from the locale to the loyal returning visitors. Theirs is the legacy we cherish and that drew us to the property.

In 2017, Ralph and Trish decided it was time to pass the baton and find someone who would be willing and able to carry on the legacy they built at the ranch. Some new investments and a fresh perspective was in order. A group of families banded together to make it happen. In March 2018, the newly designated Greenhorn Group closed escrow and broke ground on the first of a long list of renovations to uplift the historic property and carry on the spirit of Ralph.

Who are we? We are dads and husbands, wives and mothers, buckaroos and kids with a will to run free, city folk and mountain dwellers, business owners and fly fishers. Together, we are interested in seeing our families flourish and our relationships thrive. We are here to invest in our family and in yours. We value our tribes and spend our time intentionally. We hope you’ll join us.

“Love! That’s what this is all about. Everything we do is done in love and for love and with love.”

Ralph dedicated his life to his community and every Greenhorn who walked through the gates. He told us that if there’s one legacy he’d like to leave behind – that he only asks that we dedicate ourselves to keep love as our focus of all things at Greenhorn. Every action we take, every relationship we build is done in the spirit of Ralph, with love.

ing people together, a theme that seems to weave through this place our visitors call magical.

Executive Chef Scott Burns is pioneering Dude Ranch cuisine, California-style. Born and raised in the Sierra communities, he honed his skill between traditional fine dining steak houses in the Mountain West and California’s pride: farm-to-table restaurants utilizing the freshest fare available from local vendors. Chef Scott blends traditional dude ranch fare with a modern take and wholistic living approach. Using what produce he can grow in the rural Sierra mixed with the best ingredients he can source from local ranchers and farmers, Chef Scott is enthused by the challenges of cooking on the trail. Looking to local history to guide his menu, a Spanish paella harkens to the original western ranchers’ dietary preferences and Basque cuisine favorites bring family-style dining back to basics as the shepherds in the area did. He will roast a pig on a spit or blend the finest vegan cuisine to make your dude ranch getaway exactly the experience you’re craving.

We all know whiskey was made for cowboys. Tequila tastes better in the sun. Gin is for the steadfast. Here at the Greenhorn, we drink to new experiences, to fear faced down, to a long trail ride, and to a great day spent together.

Heck, we’ll pretty much drink to anything at the Greenhorn Saloon. Our full-service bar is open to guests and laymen. Artisan whiskey fills our shelves and and local beer is always on draft. We hope you will belly up to our bar and tell your tallest tale from life on the trail. This is how the west was won.

Your Chef, Executive Chef Scott Burns

Raised throughout small California towns dotting the Sierra, Greenhorn Ranch’s new executive Chef Scott Burns’ passion for the mountain air comes alive in his cooking at the ranch.

Greenhorn Partners knew they found their man when he expressed his love for building community, for cooking with a purpose, and for bringing people together at one table. Scott blends fine dining with farm-to-table and historic ranch-style recipes to bring California ranch-style new meaning.

“The thing I excel at is using really high ingredients to make comfort food and taking a fine dining twist on them. I kinda get all over the place with some familiar flavors that feed our soul,” he said. “At the ranch, my goal is to not try to deviate too far from the dude ranch expectation. As much as we can, we’re going to try to utilize local products without trying to overthink it too much.”

Why our riding stands out

  • Greenhorn Ranch is a guest ranch in California’s Lost Sierra. Horseback riding takes center stage on the ranch on 660 acres and access to 500,000 acres of public lands for riding. Our wranglers are here to show you everything you need to know so you can experience cowboy culture first-hand and become comfortable riding a horse. Never ridden a horse? We will teach you. An experienced rider? Enjoy a breathtaking ride over mountains, through streams on thousands of miles of trail.
  • Our all-inclusive stays include two daily trail rides which are approximately 90 minutes each. Kids ages six and over can participate in the daily trail rides. Those younger than six can still experience ranch life first-hand inside our arena with our experienced wranglers and ranch-hands. We have more than 80 experienced horses who live to work, and they are ready for their next Greenhorn to get in the saddle. We also offer daily lessons and ride assessments.
  • We offer basic horsemanship lessons daily, to assist you in learning how to avoid common position flaws and be safely balanced in the saddle. This will help you and your horse feel better during and after your rides. If advancing your riding ability is a goal while staying with us, we want to help you pursue this goal.

Horsetopia. Loved it

Beautiful place with something for horse lovers and beginners alike who just want to get away. My wife and I spent a weekend at Greenhorn with our son and a friend - teenage boys, who we were tearing away from their computers. The horse rides offered twice a day were perfect for transforming the teenagers and us as well - we felt our worries literally drop from our shoulders as we became relaxed and aware of the beauty of nature around us. Our wranglers were awesome, especially Joe who has been in the saddle for 60 years+ almost every day. You could literally feel his passion for horses at every step. Great halloween party, games room, bar, chuckhouse all rounded out the weekend. Great experience, highly recommended.
