Ranch History

Smith Fork Ranch has deep, authentic ranching roots. The property was originally part of the Bar X Bar Ranch, founded in 1928 and several of the historic log cabins date back to that era.

Over time, those original structures were carefully restored and the ranch evolved into the refined, all-inclusive guest experience it is today, while keeping its Western character and sense of place.

Today’s legacy: Smith Fork Ranch remains a family-owned luxury destination that still reflects its roots. The architecture, landscape and hospitality honor the land’s history, while the experience and service reflect a modern, elevated sensibility, giving guests the rare combination of authentic ranch life and five-star comfort in a private, wilderness setting.

The Setting

Private Land (250-1000 acres)

Spanning a vast 240 acres, Smith Fork Ranch sits at 7,100 feet in a high-desert mountain valley defined by rocky, arid terrain, rolling foothills and native scrub oak, with cottonwood-lined riparian corridors and views of Needle Rock, the West Elk Mountains and Saddle Mountain.

Due to the dry, rocky footing and preservation-focused trail conditions, riding on ranch land is primarily walk-only, offering relaxed, scenic, guest-paced rides directly from the property.

Public Land (more than 50k acres)

There is a massive 1.67 million acres of public land surrounding Smith Fork Ranch – national forest lands share the region’s high-desert, mountainous character, with rocky backcountry trails, scrub oak and sagebrush hillsides, open parks, and mixed aspen and evergreen forests.

Trails are accessed through private entry points from the ranch, making encounters with other users rare, and allowing for a sense of privacy and remoteness uncommon on public lands.

Terrain remains predominantly rocky and dry, so rides continue to be primarily walk-focused, prioritizing safety, horse welfare and a relaxed, immersive exploration.
