Set in British Columbia's heartland amid rolling grasslands and rugged river canyons, the award-winning ‘Find Your Wild’ experience at Siwash Lake Wilderness Resort & Ranch offers you world-class horseback riding and nature-based adventures with your own private guide.

This robust, all-inclusive experience is rich in exclusivity and personalized service; when paired with a strong currency conversion, it delivers exceptional value compared to the top USA luxury ranches.

Siwash Lake is a boutique hideaway; an intimate, family-run operation, hosting no more than 12-16 guests at one time.

This highly immersive and personalized experience focuses on the magical bond between horses and humans, for beginners and experts alike.

Beyond riding, Siwash Lake offers ecology studies, hiking, fly fishing, frontier games (shooting; hatchet throwing; 3D cross country archery), bush craft, biking, canoeing and waterfall exploration by paddle board.

Environmental & Social Practices

Environment

Siwash Lake Wilderness Resort & Ranch has been rated a top eco-friendly luxury destination in Canada (the Globe & Mail) and was the first of only a few in the country to be awarded a Platinum certification for sustainability by Green Tourism Canada.

Siwash Lake is also a Biosphere Certified Destination. Both accolades involve rigorous and regular 3rd party audits.

The ranch is off-grid and runs off solar power. There are many other environmentally sensitive sytems in place: to name only a few, the ranch utilizes rainwater, has an extensive recycling and waste management program, produces organic food on site and advocates for land stewardship.

Conservation and preservation projects are ongoing. Rewilding is a core activity and is undertaken through the ranch's non-profit foundation.

Community

Siwash Lake hosts culture camps and youth empowerment camps for neighbouring indigenous communities.

Conservation

Tree planting, natural pest management for fir beetle fencing to protect riparian and wetland areas, aeration for aquatic habitat, creating land reserves, lobbying against mining in the area, invasive species control, pasture rotation, wildlife rescue (re-introduction of beavers), ecology studies for guests, interpretive trail etc.

The Setting

Private Land (250-1000 acres)

Siwash Lake is located on a high plateau in the foothills of the Marble Mountains and this private estate encompasses over 300 acres.

The heart of it is where the home ranch is located, set amid wild hay meadows overlooking the serene Siwash Lake.

Our 10,000+ acres of guiding territory is uninhabited and surrounds the home ranch. It features open rangeland, river canyons, secluded lakes and two wilderness rivers.

Over eight years ago, a wildfire transformed much of our old-growth fir forests into patches of silver sentinels, now carpeted with pink fireweed blossoms so tall they brush your stirrups!

Swathes of vibrant young aspen groves showcase nature's resiliency, while golden grasslands roll gently amidst it all.

This landscape is unique, striking, soul-stirring and beautiful. Here in the rugged wilds of British Columbia's heartland, you’ll experience some of the best horseback riding in North America!

Public Land (10,000-20,000 acres)

Our Riding

Scheduled rides

Guests head down to the barn at 10am each morning to groom and saddle their horses. They spend the first morning in a full orientation session, learning about their horse and the skills required to get the most out of their equine experience at Siwash.

Unscheduled rides

Guests can choose how much riding and what type they want to do each day, whether it be an hour working on new skills in the arena, or a two-hour ride with some loping before lunch – we cater to the individual.

Guided rides

No nose-to-tail! We take guests in their own family groups, or in the case of couples, either on their own together or paired with another couple of similar ability, to all our favourite places on the range.

Unguided rides

After a few rides with the owner, guests with proven ability and route-finding skills have the privilege of riding on their own without a guide or other guests when staying for seven nights or more.

Program rides

All-day rides down to a river for a campfire picnic with swimming and fishing; or to a high mountain bluff for an exquisite view, or an epic seven-hour trip through a canyon to breathtaking waterfalls.

Riding Freedom

Ride with your own private guide (two to six in a party); join with other like-minded guests (maximum six in a group); or those with proven ability may ride on your own without a guide or other guests, following orientation and some discovery rides with the owner.

The duration, route and pace of each ride is tailored to guest preferences.

Good to know

We coach one-on-one to ensure that all guests learn to take their riding to a new level, from complete novice through to expert.

Weight limit for riding

225-250 lbs

Riding considerations

no riding experience needed, We recommend a good level of physical fitness, We offer accessible riding programs for riders with varying needs, We consider height and athletic ability as well as a guest's weight

Hours in the saddle

Why our riding stands out

  • Siwash Lake's signature equine experience, 'SiwashSynergy', is an immersive program that takes riders through a step-by-step engaging orientation, covering everything from grooming and groundwork, to saddling and riding. We'll help you build confidence, skills and understanding, and guests are matched with their own personal horse for the duration of their stay.
  • Ride happy, healthy and responsive horses through the wilds of BC with no nose-to-tail. Explore a variety of terrain and over 100 miles of wilderness trails with your own private guide and no other guests other than those in your party. Ride duration and pace is adjusted for you personally, with half-day or full-day rides available throughout your stay.
  • Private guides offer extensive one-on-one coaching for beginner through advanced levels. They are professionals who are passionate about helping foster the magical bond between horses and humans, while interpreting the local history, culture and ecology of our wilderness paradise.

Fishing & Wildlife

Nestled high on the Bonaparte Plateau, the ranch is surrounded by numerous wilderness lakes and is flanked by two rivers. Their picturesque shores are all within a half-hour radius of the ranch.

Your personal angling guide will take you to our favourite fishing spots in a 4x4 truck. Many of these places are well hidden off the beaten track – just getting to them is like being on a safari adventure, there will be plenty of wildlife and stunning scenery along the way!

Once there, you're sure to relax and let nature unwind your woes. Bask in warm sunshine sparkling on emerald depths, listen to the wild call of a loon and take in the excitement of a fish on the line.

You'll be fishing for 2-15lb rainbow trout and will have the opportunity to use waders, float tubes and a boat with super-quiet electric motor.

We offer all types of fishing; you can do traditional spin casting from shore, troll from a boat, or learn to fly fish, whatever your preference.

Your guide will help you 'match the hatch' and perfect your dry fly and wet fly techniques, using both floating and sinking line.

Fishing on offer

spin, fly, river, stocked pond, lake, stream, equipment available, guided inclusive, guided non-inclusive, unguided, instruction available

Wildlife

Black bear, moose, deer, coyote, wolf, cougar, badger, river otter, fox, eagle, owl, osprey and the list goes on!

Our Perfect Family Vacation

Our family had an incredible time during our 4 night stay at Siwash. The activities were such a blast - our favourites including horseback riding, fly-fishing, archery, and shooting. The guides were lovely, and all the staff in general were so attentive. This is truly a 5 star lodge in all aspects; service, dining, accommodation, etc. The scenery is so unique and so beautiful... with lots of wild animals and flowers. We hope to go back again soon, but for 7 nights instead next time! We definitely recommend at least 4 nights to experience everything this wonderful place has to offer. Thank you Siwash
