Handmade quilts, wood floors, ornate log burls in main house.
Our meals are all served family style in the main ranch house dining room where guests, staff and family sit together. We provide hearty, healthy ranch meals with a constantly changing menu based on locally raised beef, pork and chicken (and good fish when we can get it!), garden fresh vegetables from a local organic greenhouse, lots of fruit, fresh cream and home-baked breads and desserts. Meals are always plentiful with a lot of variety. Guests supply their own wine and liquor.
Grass Ranch is a 6th generation cattle ranch and guest ranch, offering guests exceptional riding in both mountain country and rolling plains, with great horses, wonderful meals, adventure and good fishing. Come join us and ride to high alpine lakes, learn to work and move cattle, canter across the meadows, and relax and rejuvenate in spectacular country. Each day brings a host of riding choices, including morning and afternoon rides (lunch at the ranch), short and long all day rides (sack lunches), sunset rides, dinner rides, and the opportunity to participate in a horsemanship clinic or try riding bareback. We have a herd of about 65 of our own, well-loved horses and do our best to match horses and riding abilities. We walk, trot and lope and riding lessons are available at any time, free of charge. Our guests are also welcome to take part in all aspects of ranch life, from cattle moving to horse work, checking fences, salting and doctoring livestock, but always as a choice among many options. Sweet Grass Creek flowing through the property provides fishing for rainbow, brown and brook trout, as do alpine lakes and a series of beaver ponds with a boat for the kids. The Crazy Mountains offer excellent opportunities for photography, painting, hiking, wildlife viewing and birding, with their snowy tops and sage amongst the evergreen slopes. Overnight packtrips (extra charge) go out at guests’ requests. We have gymkhanas, campfires, outdoor games for the energetic (volleyball, horseshoes, paintball, bikes to borrow) and a comfy living room in the lodge for music, pool, cards and a quiet read by the fire. We take guests to local rodeos and can arrange day trips at an extra cost to Yellowstone National Park, white water rafting, Indian ceremonials and museums.
Sweet Grass started out as a kids’ camp years ago; we understand the magic that happens between a kid and a horse. We do not have a formal children’s program because kids are welcome to participate in all ranch activities, to their abilities, including riding, caring for their horse, learning to rope, lessons, games on horseback and a host of activities designed to build comfort and confidence. The ranch is well set up for kids’ entertainment, with a variety of activities including soccer, volleyball, softball, paintball, swimming (on your horse or off your horse in the creek!), a natural waterslide, campfires, teenage rides and hikes, pool, cards and board games. We offer kid-only rides (as well as adult-only rides), fishing trips and overnights.
